The Song of Achilles
Madeline Miller
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Madeline Miller’s books will destroy your heart and soul, but will also get you hooked on Greek mythology. A great introduction, even if you’ve never considered reading about it. The main characters of the Trojan war are gently introduced to you and you will quickly become familiar with hating all of them.
The myths do a stand up job of portraying the barbarism of humanity being a constant let down. At least the way we treat each other now seems a little less bad..? No? It’s all a shit show, what do I know.
We meet Patroclus, who from the start was never enough for his father. Sent away to the palace of a king more forgiving than his father, he is trained and raised alongside other boys his age. All of them exist in the shadow of Achilles, the most beautiful strong young warrior prophesied for great things. Patroclus is not jealous of Achilles, only in awe. And Achilles shows a special interest in Patroclus as well. They become great friends, which eventually grows into more. Together they must face their inevitable duties in the Trojan war.
The song of achilles is a must read love story that sparked my obsession for Greek Mythology. Madeline Miller is a legend herself. This book will take you for a ride. With all the new names (if you are new to greek mythology) Madeline does an amazing job not overwhelming you completely. The Trojan war lays the groundwork for many other stories and books about Greek mythology and this book is the best one to start with.
Trigger warning: Lots and lots of murder and rape. And some homophobia.
