Acts of Service

Lillian Fishman

⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you are looking for a sex book that will make you hate yourself, look no further. This book plays with a ‘bisexual’ stereotype that is disturbing and bordering offensive - but that may be the whole point.

The main character Eve takes her long-term girlfriend for granted and slides into an existing relationship (if you can call it that). The mundane life of a monogamous lesbian relationship bores her so much that she posts her nudes online in search of adoration. She meets Olivia, who is involved with Nathan. Surprise, he is also her boss. A privileged white man who is far too conscious of his power. Lovely! We are reminded multiple times by Nathan that it is ‘consensual’, but it straight-up feels wrong. Hyper self-aware, the book mostly consists out of Eve’s reflections and self-hate.

Lilian rips love, romance, sex and feminism (yes) apart. She somehow knows what rubs me the wrong way and splashes it out on the pages. And inevitably in your face. If you are conflicted with morality in relationships and attraction to men, and you want to explore this further than this may be the book for you.

Well written? Yes absolutely.

Sexy? Unfortunately, yes. But also highly disturbing****

Do I agree with it? No. But again, that is the point.

Trigger warning: Romanticises rape as a kink???
